Perry's Cafe

Yes they are now gone but our memories will live in our minds forever! I would drive 1 1/2 hrs south to San Diego to eat breakfast at Perry's and stay overnight by the bay! The employees were always happy and ready to help you with whatever you needed! The place was clean but nothing fancy just a lot of good food ! Sorry to see an icon go bye bye!

I loved Perry's!! My wife and I wouldn't even look at the menu. Our "go-to" was the Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, along with a Blueberry Muffin, which we would take home. I'm so glad I bought my Girl a Perry's t-shirt the last time we were in there. She can Rock it in memory now!! Perry's, Please change your mind!! You were an institution of Quality Food!!!

It was sad to see this longtime local breakfast institution announce its closure because a developer had purchased the property and will be constructing some residential units near the Old Town trolley station. Then on Monday I learned it would be their final day of business which was ten days earlier than scheduled. We visited Perry's Cafe on the last weekend of operation and needless to say, there was a long line of folks queued up in front of the building. I went to the hostess stand to place our party name on the waitlist. The worker said it would take about 20 minutes which was surprisingly short given the number of people milling about. Our spots were at the countertop bar which was perfect to allow us an upclose view of the kitchen staff in action. It was busy but not as chaotic as I thought it was going to be. The waitresses all seemed to be very seasoned and on-point with their routines. The line cooks had the difficult task of keeping up with the volume of orders. I think the last time I dined here was nearly a decade ago. Other than the prices, the menu had likely not changed much at all. Frittatas and Mexican Breakfast plates made up the front page. The regular Breakfast offerings of Egg plates, Omelettes, Classics, Pancakes, French Toast, and Waffles were on the following page. Sandwiches, Burgers, and Mexican fare were the lunch choices on the third page. The last page consisted of a la carte sides, beverages, and a children's menu. My friend and I each selected one of the Egg plates with the only differences being a Burger Patty for my protein versus Corned Beef Hash and how the eggs were prepared (sunny side up for me). We each had hash browns and a blueberry loaf muffin as our sides. The loaf muffin was the star of the show as I have never tasted a muffin so fluffy and soft. A dollop of whipped butter was provided that I used generously to enhance the calories of the muffin. The portion size of the entire dish was fair for the price. Thank you to the owners for the nearly 40 years of service to the SD community!

Perry's Cafe is closed forever. It's closed yesterday August 5, 2024. It was supposed to close on August 15th, my 68th birthday. But, I guess when the closing chapter of San Diego culinary history calls your table, who cares about the future? There were several cars and pickups in Perry's lot, and people, breakfast people, were standing around sad, disoriented, hungry. I took two gloomy pictures, and I could barely concentrate and navigate my Subaru safely home. All I could think about was Perry's omelets, grilled ham steak, biscuits and gravy , as an entree or a side, crispy thick bacon, blessed coffee, hash browns with butter and salt. So many people from all over the world ate breakfast and lunch at Perry's. It was far more authentic than the coffee shop at the end of Pulp Fiction. You could sit at the counter, especially alone, when the joint would be jammed with people of every size and color jammin' to real low down San Diego cholesterol infused life! Finally, Yelp Perry's and give them 5-Stars. They have 4 stars now? Let's make sure their ultimate Yelp is 5-Star. mc in pb

Came for one last time at Perry's since their closing soon. I got the corned beef hash, eggs over medium, hash browns, and the blueberry muffin. It was really busy because everyone wants to have it one last time before they close, our wait was about 20 minutes. The corned beef was the canned type but they crisp it up very well which is what makes it so good. The hash browns had a nice crust, so I didn't need to order it extra crispy, all the pics I've seen where people order them extra crispy were a bit burnt. They do it right as its supposed to be, so theres no need to order it crispy like you need to at other places. (Pro tip, look at pics before you go to a place) The eggs were perfect, what was unique was the blueberry muffin instead of the usual toast; The muffin was very soft and came with a scoop of whipped butter. Theres tobacco sauce on the counter but the waitress asked if I wanted salsa which I though was a better choice than the tobacco since its more flavorful and doesn't have that vinegar taste to it. Given how busy it was the staff did an excellent job its all very efficient, they come by and refill coffee often, take your order, after you are done eating, they bring you the check which you take to the register and pay, so they don't have to waste time brining you the check and process it. I like the mid century modern decor, I wish I could live in that place, its so cool and retro. Theres a large parking lot on both sides of the restaurant. so parking is easy. It will be sad to see such a place like this fade away, its my kinda place, just family run, no fancy schmancy items, just good old diner food done right. Thanks for the memories Perry!
